From recent conversations I’ve had, I’ve learned that it is common for people to confuse IT technicians with computer programmers. While they both do things with computers, they generally do different things. For example, programmers, well, program, while IT people generally support programs/users. However, having been on both sides of the spectrum, I will say it is really valuable for IT people to know programming and for programmers to appreciate how to support users. Now the harder question, where and how do you teach it? For that, I will defer to the academic experts, but overall I think those curricula should be combined.
